Fall Lay-Up Check List

by Joel Terbrueggen

  •  Remove drain plug from the hull.
  • Add stabilizer to fuel.
  • Change fuel filter(s)
  • Start engine and run 15-20 minutes (or until warm.)
  • Change oil and filter.
  • Run engine another 15-20 min. (distributes new oil.)
  • Drain block and water jackets, otherwise antifreeze is too diluted. To avoid this step, use straight antifreeze. Two gallons is sufficient for most engines.
  • Add antifreeze. The preferred method is to draw the antifreeze through the engine using the water pump. This assures the antifreeze reaching all areas.  Care must be given to engines with thermostats.  Proper protection will not be obtained if the engine is not run long enough to open the thermostat and allow the antifreeze into the block.
  • Fog the carburetor during last 30 seconds of running.
  • Remove spark plugs and fog each cylinder or squirt transmission fluid in.
  • Remove coil wire and crank engine several times.
  • Cover carburetor and intake valve with plastic or duct  tape for the winter.
  • Tape over the exhaust pipe(s).
  • Remove unnecessary equipment for the winter.
  • Thoroughly clean the boat, inside and out.TIPS
  • Apply vaseline to rubber moldings such as around the base of many windshields.
  • Make sure seats and rear seat backs are open to allow good ventilation during the winter.
  • Add rust inhibitor to antifreeze for added protection.
  • Fill gas tank to reduce condensation over the winter.
  • Do any engine touch-ups at this time.
  • Perform any repairs at this time so the engine is ready to go next spring.
  • Have a professional do the engine winterization if you are not sure about the process. Cracked blocks are much more expensive than a winterizing bill!Winterizing
  • Drain and replace transmission fluid if separate from engine.
  • Shut off fuel valves and drain carburetor and sediment bowl if equipped.
  • Install tune-up parts: spark plugs, points, condenser, distributor cap, rotor and fuel filters.
  • Grease any fittings, fill and turn grease cups.
  • Remove battery – protect from freezing and charge
    periodically.
  • Note: There is no better time than now to make those repairs that you’ve been putting off all summer!
